I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating valve to stop all the water to your home.

Once that’s done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to get things sorted.

While waiting, clear away any important items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

The toilet has its own tap alongside the toilet bowl.
