I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. We’ll be there promptly to solve the problem.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items from the area, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
