I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important things close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
